A tribute to and scrapbook of Joe Amato, world-class drummer and respected teacher header image 3

April Update

We’ve been online for just a few weeks and slowly but surely things are starting to gel. Several exciting things have happened and should bear some succulent fruit in the days ahead. 1) Amato instructed percussion ace Jim Mattila found the site and commented that he approves and has a lot of good information about Joe which intends to send along to be included here. Jim also informed us of 3 other Amato students: Ed Ohlmann, Carlo Santtili and Mark Goodenberger who is Director of Percussion Studies at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. Ed and Jim are featured in the picture of the AHS Old Timers Concert with Joe Amato that graces our front page. The rest of the backline , Dennis LaPlante and Craig Abrahamson were also under Joe’s tutelage and well on their way to becoming standout professionals percussionists. (See Jim’s comment under the Joe Amato Drums FORUMS for details). I was able to call Tom Coryell last week and he mentioned he had a photo of Joe and himself. I’m going to try and contact him this week to see if we can somehow get it included in the site. John Moore’s brother Fitz recalled among other things that when Don Marshall was band director at AHS in the early 60’s, his former Arlington Or high school classmate Doc Severinsen was persuaded to come play in Astoria with the AHS Jazz ensemble. John Moore was tapped to swing the trap set duties on that gig. I look forward to John’s report on that someday. Craig Abrahamson has also provided some names added to the Roll Call, though he is extremely busy these days I’ll ask him to please provide some more input. Speaking of input, their are at least 3 ways to add to the site. 1) Get me your email and I will reply with the keys to obtaining Author status. Authors bypass the moderator and write comments, posts and pages at their leisure. The piece will show up right away as they will not have to wait for the moderators inspection and can be edited as the Author deems prudent. (If we don’t use the moderator process we get a lot of spam ads for Viagra and worse.)2) Email any info you have to me; J. Pierce Christie at and I will do the rest. 3) Information can be snail mailed to me at: Main Street Music

111 Main Street

Sandpoint, Id. 83864.

If you have pictures or articles that you can’t get to go through the email make me a copy and mail it. Thanks for checking in and may your best roll never be the one around your waist. -JPC 04/06/08

Oh yeah, the other way to convey info is by leaving a comment. It’s easy and can be anonymous. It just takes a little while to go through the moderator.
